Our story

Garry Scott Groundworks, Landscaping & Maintenance are a widely respected company based in Huddersfield, West Yorkshire. After gaining many years’ experience with a well-known groundwork and construction company, Garry decided to further his boundaries and in 2006, and Garry Scott GLM was founded. As it is well known that many new start businesses fail in the first year of trading, Garry planned to be in it for the long term, so started with manageable domestic contracts that he could fulfil on time to build up a comprehensive portfolio quickly, which in turn would show prospective customers the quality and professionalism of the company that still holds fast to this day. Garry’s passion grew and with customer’s positive experiences, so did the size of the contracts. In the early years, Garry was fortunate to be able to utilise his father George’s own experience within the trade and enjoyed the father son working relationship for almost eight years. This was either a lucky or fortunate move as when the recession came, many SMC’s fell by the wayside, but with Garry’s company working lean, this enabled them to not just survive, but actually grow. 

From 2013, Garry Scott GLM used the recession as a catalyst and platform to launch the next phase of his company’s growth. With there now being a void in the commercial market due to the space provided by other companies' misfortunes, Garry invested his savings into creating employment for other local people that had lost their jobs due to the recession. The workforce had local experience and this enabled Garry to agree contracts with many local schools. By 2017 this had grown to over 20. More contracts followed which created more employment for local people which in turn created even more contract opportunities in various sectors, including sports stadia such as the John Smiths Stadium, and also the TV and Film industry working with iconic names such as Netflix and Disney. 

Creating local employment and generating local business has never been just about profit. It’s always been much more than that. It has been, and always will be, a passion for growth. Not just for him and his company, but also for the local community, as within his annual budget is a percentage plan for giving back to that same local community in sponsorship and charity. Many local sports groups have benefitted through projects such as the memorial garden at HTAFC, as have charities such as The Welcome Centre Food Bank in Huddersfield. More recently Garry has sent charity further afield with a local NGO, Huddersfield to Ukraine Humanitarian Aid, supplying feminine hygiene, animal foods and medical aid to the Ukrainian women, children, elderly and animals.
